Carpe Diem: Siezing Earth Day in 2024

“Carpe diem!”

A cliché tattoo or an inspiring Latin aphorism? Known by kids nowadays as “the old-fashioned #YOLO” (You Only Live Once), “carpe diem” has been popular for centuries and will likely remain so for generations to come. Translated from Latin as “seize the day”, it inspires people to take action in the here and now. And taking action in the here and now is exactly what Mother Nature needs most.

Our Plastic Usage

The UK emitted 5.15 tonnes of CO2 per capita in 2021, making us the fifth most pollutant, just after Australia, the United States, Canada and China. And do you know which industry contributes to this total? Plastics! It takes 2.5 tonnes of CO2 to produce just 1 tonne of plastic, but that’s not the worst part: 12 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year, killing 100,000 marine animals and 1 million sea birds. As well as our sea life, us Homo sapiens are suffering too. Microplastics bioaccumulate in our major organs, causing multiple health issues, and have even been found in the human placenta… yikes.

The short story? There are so many plastics are in the food we eat and the air we breathe that experts are now calling our era the Plasticene.

Join us

This is exactly why Sustainable Mode is excited to join millions of activists from 192 countries in celebrating Earth Day on 22nd April. This year, the theme is Planet vs. Plastics, with organisers demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.

Our Mission

We believe that the simplest way to reduce plastic production is to provide plastic-free alternatives to everyday products. Check out some of our favourites below:

Bamboo – who knew?

As a fast-growing, naturally antibacterial and renewable resource, bamboo is #1 on our list. Need an eco-friendly toothbrush, hairbrush, comb or even some dental floss? Sustainable Mode has got you covered!

Cotton on

We’re glad eco-warriors are cottoning on to the benefits of cotton! Our durable and reusable hair ties and make-up pads reduce landfill waste whilst saving those precious pennies. It’s high time we start being kind to our bodies and kind to the planet.

Going nuts for coconuts

The up-and-coming dark horse of the plastic-free world is – of course – the simple coconut. Its strong, hairy shell makes for perfect scourers and organic candles… we can’t get enough!
